Salmon Sausage Patties

Picture

Ingredients:

2 14.75 oz. cans salmon or equivalent of fresh salmon
3 eggs
1 1/2 - 2 tsp. sage
1 - 1 1/2 tsp each:
  • sea salt or smoked sea salt
  • thyme
  • fennel seed
  • red pepper flakes
  • smoked paprika
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • black pepper
Optional: finely chopped onion, garlic, and/or bell pepper

(As always, these amounts are mere recommendations. Feel free to experiment with the level of seasoning).
As-salaam alaikum.

These versatile patties can be made into "breakfast" type patties or into burgers. The spices can be changed to mimic sausage, traditional croquettes, or burgers. It is always best for health's sake to use fresh fish, but canned works well in a pinch or if you need to rotate items in your pantry. These are soft-baked which is much easier to digest than fried versions. They contain no breadcrumbs, therefore they remain moist and juicy. There is never a need to destroy food value by frying a salmon patty.

HTETL Book 1, chapter 2, pg. 8: "Do not eat fried or hard baked foods, if you can avoid them. When it comes to meats, no fried chicken or steaks, nothing fried. Fried foods are hard on your digestive system and will cut short your life."

Savory Cream of Wheat (Grits Replacement)

Picture
Ingredients for 2 servings:

2 cups whole milk
1/3 cup cream of wheat (farina)
1 tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. each (more or less as desired):
  • rosemary leaves (optional)
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • red pepper flakes (optional)
  • salt
Black pepper (to taste)
1 tbsp. parmesan cheese
1/3 cup sharp cheddar cheese

Cheese grits are a beloved dish in the black community. Yet, although some of us may have grown up eating them, grits are not in accordance with How to Eat to Live.
How to Eat to Live Book 2, chapter 26, page 96: "Do not eat popcorn; eat fresh corn in its milk stage (known as milk corn). And do not eat hominy grits."
Grits are very course. They are not the appropriate type of corn for us to eat. Fortunately, a suitable substitute is cream of wheat (also known as farina). Both are popular hot breakfast cereals, both can be eaten sweet or savory. When we know better, we do better.

Herb Facts:

Picture
Thanks to our good sister Divine Iz Earth for providing a wonderful education on the properties of various herbs.

Teaching: Basic CPR & Heart Health
HERB OF THE MONTH: Hawthorn

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycanthus) has long been considered the herb of choice for strengthening and protecting the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart. In the late 1800s, European doctors began experimenting with it clinically for heart disease and other cardiovascular disorders, and since then its reputation has grown steadily.

Today numerous laboratory tests and a number of clinical trials support its use by demonstrating that hawthorn leaves, flowers, and fruits contain chemical compounds that increase blood flow to the heart muscle, as well as positively affect other aspects of cardiovascular health. Hawthorn has been used successfully for angina pectoris, functional heart disease, arrhythmia, early manifestations of circulatory insufficiency, and as a heart tonic to regulate circulation. Hawthorn is safe for long-term use and needs to be taken over a period of several months to achieve results.

Hawthorn should not be given to children. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use hawthorn.

Anyone with problems or health conditions related to any of these herbs or their actions should not use them. Some herbs are known to react with your medication. Please consult your physician or NGE health practitioner before starting on any herb.

Notes on Milk Consumption

Picture
“O Allah! I seek Thy refuge from anxiety and grief and I seek Thy refuge from lack of strength and laziness and I seek Thy refuge from cowardice and niggardliness and I seek Thy refuge from being overpowered by debt and the oppression of men. O Allah! Suffice Thou me with what is lawful to keep me away from what is prohibited and with Thy grace make me free from want of what is besides Thee.”

As-salaam alaikum.

The above supplication is perhaps my favorite prayer because it strengthens us against the faults that stand in the way of our peace, contentment, and righteousness. One line in particular, “Suffice Thou me with what is lawful to keep me away from what is prohibited...”, is one of the most concise yet profound requests of any prayer I have ever heard.
As we become truly satisfied with what Allah has made lawful for us, most of our problems cease to exist. Petty jealousies are eliminated, and we lose the desire to covet things which are not ours. We gain peace in our lives. Satisfaction with whatever we are blessed with keeps us from living outside our means. Contentment encourages one to embody humility and modesty, two essential traits of a Muslim. The above plea to be pleased with the straight path is particularly pertinent to the subject matter of this blog because it offers protection from the desire to follow the ignorant trends we see being aggressively pushed in the “natural health” community. It reminds us to be comfortable and secure, understanding that How to Eat to Live is sufficient. In fact, it is superior to any innovations that popular "gurus" have to offer us. This prayer develops a pristine desire to submit to our dietary law in a perfect manner, or as closely as we possibly can.

Cloves for Tooth Pain Relief

Picture
As-salaam alaikum.

What can be done when someone in your family has a tooth ache that you wish to treat naturally, at least until you can make it to the dentist? Try CLOVE BUD OIL. You may already be familiar with cloves if you enjoy cooking and baking. This medicinal spice becomes essential every Autumn as a subtle flavor in apple and pumpkin pies. Although cloves are a great spice to enhance many indigenous meals and American seasonal desserts, there is much more to learn about cloves.
Clove bud oil is an inexpensive, yet highly effective remedy for many tooth, throat, and mouth pains. Similar to Benzocaine, it numbs the problem area, instantly offering relief from discomfort. Cloves help fight off parasites, infections, inflammation, and may help prevent tooth decay. Eugenol, a chemical compound found in cloves, has been used by dentists since the 19th century. It is still found in many toothpastes, mouth washes, and dental products.

As-salaam alaikum.

Being a domestically capable woman requires preparedness. One should know (or be in the process of learning) a little bit about everything, because nearly every science and art is applicable to homemaking. When you take on the responsibility of managing a household, by default you become a doctor, herbalist, pharmacist, psychologist, secretary, chef, maid, motivational speaker, publicist... and the list goes on (smile). Keeping one's family happy and healthy is so much easier when one has access to everything they need.

A Perspective on Muslim Hospitality

Picture
As-salaam alaikum.

The following article appeared in the Muhammad Speaks Newspaper on June 27, 1969. It is written by Sister Captain Bayyinah Sharrrieff Hamza in her “On Life in the Sudan” series. In this series, she compares life in the Afro-Arab country of Sudan to the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Much of this wonderful series is available for research on the www.noiwc.info website.
"To be accepted as a guest in a Muslim society is a pleasure and a great honor. Upon entering a Muslim Sudanese home, one feels comfortable. There is a peaceful ease about the reception by the host and hostess. Usually, the women are escorted to the ladies’ sitting room or the garden or yard within the compound away from the men; while the men stay in the front yard or in the main sitting room (living room). Cool lemonade or tamarahindi, or kirkaday or helamoor (cool soft drinks made from spices, dates and powdered herbs) perhaps even an orange soda pop or a coke are brought in, seemingly immediately after being seated.

Eating in Restaurants

Picture
As-salaam alaikum.

When I was new to Islam, I did not fully grasp the importance of being careful and deliberate about the foods I ate. I aimed to follow How to Eat to Live regarding the types of foods to eat (for the most part). However, as I gained life experience, I learned the science of eating goes much deeper than that. There is a lot more to consider than our lists of permissible and prohibited foods. Most of the Muslims I encountered at that time were not strict in their diets. They were very comfortable eating from restaurants.
I took on the same habits. I believed the other changes I had made were radical enough. Luckily, as the teachings developed my refinement and awareness, I began observing the habits of different cultures of people. What I saw made me cautious about eating food that was not prepared by me or my close circle of believers. Slowly, I began to stay away from most peoples' foods.

*Disclaimer: The following are my personal experiences. It is a generalization and does not apply to every individual.

In my studies yesterday, I came across this quote:

Ful Medames (Breakfast Beans)

Picture
Ingredients:

1 lb. small red beans
Salt to taste (if you are using unsalted beans),
Black pepper to taste
Garlic or garlic powder (to taste)
2-3 tsp. cumin
Red pepper flakes to taste (optional)
Olive oil or sesame oil (drizzled on top)
Toppings (optional - you can use any of those listed below or none at all)

Optional:
2-3 tomatoes (chopped)
1 onion (chopped)

As-salaam alaikum.

I love trying ethnic foods from around the world. Culinary anthropology is a fascinating subject. Much can be learned about a culture through its food. One thing indigenous cuisines usually have in common is simplicity; they have no need for decadence. Recently, after spending several months teaching abroad, I really began to desire a warm pot of navy beans. Unfortunately, navy beans were not one of the varieties of legumes I was able to find (I found soybeans and black beans). Even amidst all of the chicken, mangoes, lemongrass, noodles, and curries, months without beans made me feel quite deprived because I am used to eating them nearly every day. Nothing satiates like beans.

The Messenger teaches us repeatedly in How to Eat to Live that simple foods are best. Simple is not synonymous with the adjectives “boring” or “bland”. The word “simple” implies that we create our meals using wholesome traditional foods, specifically our dietary "trinity" (beans, wheat bread, and heated {not raw} milk), along with plenty of fruit and some easily digestible vegetables. This menu puts us in harmony with the rest of the original people of the Earth who base their diets on staple foods prepared in ways that are for more delicious than typical Western "delicacies". Ful/Foul Medames (pronounced "fooll meh-DAH-mehs") is one such iconic breakfast dish eaten across Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. It is one of the dishes I craved while abroad.

As-Salaam Alaikum

Picture
As-salaam alaikum (Peace be unto you) is a divine phrase Muslims say several times each day. If examined, we find that it s far more than a simple greeting. It is often a superior choice to use in conversation with other Muslims and "conscious" Black people to replace common English phrases. English phrases are often emotionless, insincere, and superficial. They are words said out of habit, without thought and often dishonestly. English is a language of lies and injustice.

Our Arabic greeting of peace serves as a beautiful welcome, a reminder of civilization, and a prayer of freedom, justice and equality. The words "As-salaam alaikum" are music to a believer's ears.

Pandemic Productivity (How To Stay Busy): Day 5

Picture

Friday:
Need something to do to beat boredom? It's a great day to learn something new! It's amazing how many things we forget once we're out of school. It's more astounding how much we were never taught in the first place. Fascinating subjects like anthropology, hidden history, botany and health, personal economics, geography, homemaking, and critical thinking are much more fun to learn and easier to appreciate as an adult.

Our Culture Is Our Immune System

Picture
What do I mean when I explain that as Muslims "The NOI culture is our immune system"? Am I being condescending or judgmental towards those who have not accepted their own? Not at all. In fact, it is an invitation to unite with us and begin to learn the science of life. Muslims (and non-Muslims who are intelligent enough to follow some of our ways) increase or decrease our immunity according to the level we choose to adhere to our standards of living, which were given to us by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Not one of us has perfect immunity, but our decisions determine our level of protection. Let's examine how Islam protects us:
