In the early days of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) mission, the pagans in Mecca persecuted his followers. Thankfully, the Muslims were able to find refuge in Aksum. Aksum was the first country where Muslims could freely practice Islam (as taught by Prophet Muhammad).
Muhammad sent small groups of his followers across the Red Sea to be protected in Aksum. The righteous king of Aksum, Ashama ibn Abjar, is often called by his title al-Nejashi (king). Before the arrival of the Muslims, al-Nejashi followed the way of Prophet Isa (Jesus, pbuh). He welcomed the followers of Muhammad and protected them from their enemies. Later, Al-Nejashi accepted Muhammad as a Messenger of Allah (God). He was the first king to practice Islam as taught by Prophet Muhammad.
Did you know that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) spread to Africa by Arab refugees? Today, followers of Isa and Muhammad (peace be upon them) still live together in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
